Problems of International Trade

International Trade has many problems than domestic trade has. Many differences between nations create difficulties and language differences cause misuderstanding. Different ways of doing business cause confusion. Tarrifs and other trade barrier may be set up by the government.

Within one country, everyone uses the same money. Rupee is used in India, mark in France and rupiah in Indonesia. But when a German company wants to buy U.S. goods, German marks must be changed into U.S. dollars. The german company must know the rate of exchange – that is, how many dollars it will get for its marks. The rate of exchange changes constantly. This makes it difficult for businesses to estimate costs.

Problems sometimes come up because of wages. For nstance, workers in a wealthy, developed country are often paid more than workers in a poor country. But high wages can make a product of a wealthy country more expensive to produce. Workers in a wealthy country then want trade barriers to protect them from competition of low-priced imports produced by foreign workers who are paid less.

Waterpower

People, long ago, discovered that moving water has power. But for thousands of years, they put this power only to a very simple uses. For instance, by tying logs together, they made the raft that would carry them downstream.

Another early use of waterpower was for irrigation. The oldest method of irrigation was to haul water in clay jars from the river to the fields. At that time, wheel-shaped devices were developed for raising water. Some had a circle of buckets hung around the rim.

The next development in waterwheels was the turbine. Instead of flat paddles or buckets, the turbine wheel has curved blades that look somewhite the blades of a ship’s prpeller. The water flows throuh these blades as it turns the wheel.

Turbines did not become really important until 1800’s. Then the electric motor and generator were developed. They changed all this. They made it possible to send power, in the form of electric current, for hundreds of kilometers and still have enough energy left over for profitable use. A combination of turbines and electric generators is called a hydroelectric plant. Hundreds of such plants have been built all over the world.

When there is not enough water in motion to make a hydroelectric plant practical, pople build dams, which trap the water of river in an artificial lake. The water of this reservoir is let out through a hydroelectric plant combined with the dam.
